Dominating the field is an enlarged, naturalistically rendered honey bee, depicted in vibrant polychrome applied colour — with yellow and amber body, translucent veined wings, and compound purple eyes — perched upon a white multi-petalled flower, likely an apple blossom. Behind the bee, a large honeycomb lattice rendered in engraved relief fills the upper and central field, its hexagonal cells providing strong geometric contrast to the organic subject.
