Obverse description Four Chinese ideograms in clerical script (lishu) are arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square perforation, read clockwise from the top: 政 (Zheng), 和 (He), 寶 (Bao), 通 (Tong), rendering the reign-title inscription 'Zhenghe Tongbao.' The characters are rendered in a formal, disciplined clerical style characteristic of Northern Song imperial coinage under Emperor Huizong. The coin displays a raised inner rim surrounding the square hole and a broad outer rim, with the field showing the characteristic rough, porous surface typical of cast iron Song dynasty cash. Heavy encrustation and iron oxidation patina are visible across the entire surface.
