The "Heavenly body" designation refers to one of the astronomical or directional symbols stamped on these cash coins to identify the issuing military bureau and batch — a bookkeeping system developed by the Joseon government as minting was decentralized across multiple army offices in the 1740s. Each office struck coins with distinct reverse marks, making attribution possible even when the coins themselves were otherwise near-identical.
The decade spanning 1742–1752 saw repeated government efforts to stabilize copper coinage supply following chronic shortages that had plagued the peninsula since the late 17th century.
