Augusta Emerita — modern Mérida, Spain — was founded in 25 BC as a settlement for veterans of the Cantabrian Wars, soldiers who had fought in Rome's brutal campaign to pacify the last unconquered corner of the Iberian Peninsula. The colony's right to strike bronze coinage was a deliberate assertion of civic status, and the issues produced there are among the better-documented provincial bronzes of the early Principate.
RPC I 6 is one of the earlier emissions from the Emeritan series, before the mint transitioned to the magistrate-named issues that dominate later production.
