Tingi — modern Tangier — held a privileged position among Mauretanian cities, having backed Rome through the civil wars and been rewarded with the status of a municipium under Augustus. The duoviri named in this coin's legend, Allienvs and Marivs, were local magistrates exercising the kind of civic authority Rome deliberately exported to compliant provincial towns as a mechanism of Romanization.
