2500 Rupees Birth Centenary Year of Archeological and Cultural Expert Satyamohan Joshi

Satyamohan Joshi, born in 1919, spent decades documenting Nepal's Newar language, classical music, and tantric iconography at a time when much of that knowledge existed only in oral transmission or deteriorating palm-leaf manuscripts. His work on the Newari cultural heritage predated and directly informed later UNESCO recognition of the Kathmandu Valley's living traditions. Nepal Rastra Bank has issued a number of scholarly commemoratives in this vein, but Joshi is among the few honorees who lived to see his own centenary — he was 100 years old when this coin was struck.
