The Czech Republic joined the European Union on 1 May 2004, alongside nine other states in the largest single enlargement in the bloc's history. The CNB issued this bimetallic piece specifically to mark that accession, one of several commemoratives produced in the busy period surrounding membership — a politically charged moment given that Czech public support for joining, while ultimately positive in the June 2003 referendum, had been far from unanimous.
