Bukhara's cloth notes are among the most materially unusual issues in Central Asian numismatic history. The emirate — and then the short-lived People's Soviet Republic that replaced it — had no access to conventional banknote paper, so local textile was pressed into service as a printing substrate. The woven fabric itself functions as the security feature, since it could not be replicated by ordinary forgers lacking both the material and the equipment.
These circulated in a city that had been a major Silk Road trading hub for centuries, which lends the choice of fabric an unintentional historical resonance. Condition is almost always problematic: the cloth frays at edges, absorbs oils from handling, and fades unevenly.
