Abdülhamid II's gold issues from this period were minted at the Constantinople (Dersaadet) mint during a reign defined by relentless external pressure — the Ottoman treasury was so compromised by the 1875 debt default and subsequent Russo-Turkish War indemnities that the Public Debt Administration, staffed largely by European creditors, was administering Ottoman revenues directly by the time these pieces entered circulation. That a coin of this weight and fineness was being struck at all reflects the sultan's deliberate effort to project fiscal credibility he did not fully possess.
The regnal year system on Ottoman coins of this type means the date on the coin marks Abdülhamid's accession year (1293 AH), with a separate struck numeral indicating the year of reign — a detail that determines precise dating within the 1886–1908 window.
