The entire device is encircled by a finely detailed olive and laurel wreath, with the whole composition executed in high relief on a smooth field typical of late Ottoman gold coinage. |

Abdülhamid II's gold issues from this period were minted at the Constantinople (Dersaadet) mint during a reign defined by relentless external pressure — the Ottoman treasury was so compromised by the 1875 debt default and subsequent Russo-Turkish War indemnities that the Public Debt Administration, staffed largely by European creditors, was administering Ottoman revenues directly by the time these pieces entered circulation.
