The 250 Gulden "Vuurtoren" belongs to the Enschedé-produced series designed by R.D.E. Oxenaar, who served as chief designer at the Dutch Postal Service (PTT) and was one of the most distinctively modernist banknote designers working anywhere in Europe during the period. His approach — flat geometric color fields, unconventional typography, deliberate rejection of portraiture — made Dutch notes of this era immediately recognizable and genuinely unlike anything produced by contemporary European central banks.
Wim Duisenberg held the presidency when this note entered circulation; the Wellink signature dates it to the later issue run, as Wellink succeeded Duisenberg in 1982.
