Iraq's 1972 coinage program marked the first issues struck under the newly established Central Bank, which had formally absorbed the functions of the National Bank of Iraq following the Ba'athist consolidation of financial institutions. The timing was deliberate — 1972 was also the year Iraq nationalized the Iraq Petroleum Company, severing the last major concession held by Western oil interests, and the government used the currency reform to project institutional confidence during a period of acute economic restructuring.
Struck at the Royal Mint in Britain, a relationship Iraq maintained well into the 1970s despite the nationalization politics of the period.
