Beschrijving keerzijde A detailed front-facing portrait effigy of Emperor Hirohito (Showa Emperor) of Japan dominates the central field, depicting the aged emperor wearing round wire-rimmed spectacles and formal attire. The birth and death years 1901 and 1989 flank the portrait to lower left and right respectively. A scroll below the effigy bears the inscription KNIGHT OF THE GARTER, referencing his investiture into the Order of the Garter, with the Order's motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE inscribed on a ribbon scroll beneath. The circular legend HIROHITO EMPEROR OF JAPAN, punctuated by raised dots, arcs along the upper periphery, all within a fine beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Liberia's gold commemorative program of the late 1980s was largely driven by export revenue rather than domestic monetary need — these pieces were struck for the international collector market and never circulated within Liberia itself. The country had no meaningful gold minting infrastructure of its own; production was contracted to foreign facilities.

The 1989 issue honoring Hirohito appeared the same year he died, in January, after a reign of 62 years — the longest of any Japanese emperor. Whether the piece was conceived as a tribute or opportunistically retimed for the death is not recorded in the series documentation.
