The birth and death years 1901 and 1989 flank the portrait to lower left and right respectively. Liberia's gold commemorative program of the late 1980s was largely driven by export revenue rather than domestic monetary need — these pieces were struck for the international collector market and never circulated within Liberia itself. The country had no meaningful gold minting infrastructure of its own; production was contracted to foreign facilities.
The 1989 issue honoring Hirohito appeared the same year he died, in January, after a reign of 62 years — the longest of any Japanese emperor. Whether the piece was conceived as a tribute or opportunistically retimed for the death is not recorded in the series documentation.
