Niue's gold commemorative program in the late 1980s was essentially a licensing operation — the island territory issued coins bearing celebrity and sports figures under New Zealand monetary authority, with virtually no connection to Niuean economic life. This Graf piece was struck at the height of her dominance: 1989 was the year she completed her second Grand Slam title run and held the world number one ranking she would keep for a record 186 consecutive weeks.
