Flanking the central device horizontally are the Eastern Arabic numerals ١٩٤٧ (1947) to the right and ٢٠١٥ (2015) to the left, recording the institution's founding year and the anniversary year. The denomination ٢٥٠ دينار (250 Dinars) appears in Arabic script immediately below the central device. Iraq's gold coinage program through the Central Bank has been sporadic and largely aimed at the collector market rather than circulation, emerging in the post-2003 period as the reconstituted central bank worked to establish institutional credibility. The 2015 date places this issue well into the post-occupation period, after the CBI had survived an extraordinary external pressure campaign — U.S. Treasury sanctions and compliance battles between 2012 and 2014 nearly paralyzed the bank's foreign currency auctions.
