South Ossetia occupies one of the stranger corners of modern numismatics. Recognized by only a handful of UN member states following the 2008 war with Georgia, its "National Bank" issues coins with no practical monetary function — they circulate nowhere and are produced entirely for the collector market, typically by foreign minting contractors.
Vsevolod Miller (1848–1913) was a Russian philologist and folklorist whose fieldwork in the Caucasus produced foundational scholarship on Ossetian language and epic oral tradition, particularly the Nart sagas. His inclusion here reflects a broader pattern in South Ossetian numismatic output: honoring figures whose academic work lends the territory a distinct cultural identity separate from Georgia.
