The People's Bank issued platinum pieces in limited quantities throughout this period, targeting overseas buyers rather than domestic circulation, with most distribution channeled through foreign coin dealers and bank subsidiaries in Hong Kong.
The yin-yang designation distinguishes this from the standard panda platinum issues of the same year.
