Above the scene, a large Bagua (eight trigrams) symbol encircles a Yin-Yang motif, flanked by horizontal trigram lines extending to either side of the field. China's platinum panda-adjacent issues of the early 1990s occupied an awkward commercial position — priced above gold equivalents but lacking the collector base that the gold and silver panda series had built through the 1980s. The People's Bank issued platinum pieces in limited quantities throughout this period, targeting overseas buyers rather than domestic circulation, with most distribution channeled through foreign coin dealers and bank subsidiaries in Hong Kong.
The yin-yang designation distinguishes this from the standard panda platinum issues of the same year.
