China's platinum bullion program of the late 1980s and early 1990s occupied an awkward commercial position — priced above gold equivalents but lacking the collector base of the Panda series, demand was never strong enough to justify consistent annual production. The 1993 issues were among the last before the series was effectively abandoned, making surviving examples scarcer than their original mintage figures might suggest simply because so few dealers bothered to stock them at the time.
