Rama VIII — King Ananda Mahidol — died on June 9, 1946, under circumstances that have never been officially resolved, found shot in his bedroom at the Grand Palace just weeks before this issue entered production. The Thai government pressed ahead with a posthumous coinage rather than delay the currency reform, making this tin series among the few modern issues struck explicitly in a dead king's name from the outset.
Tin was chosen as wartime metal shortages had gutted Thailand's bronze and nickel supplies following Japanese occupation.
