The Makaryev Monastery, perched on the Volga's left bank in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, was founded in the 15th century by the monk Makary of Zheltovodsk, who established it on the site of his earlier hermitage before Tatar raids destroyed the original settlement in 1439. The complex was rebuilt and rose to commercial prominence as the host of the Makaryev Fair, once one of the largest trade fairs in all of Russia, before that fair relocated to Nizhny Novgorod itself in 1817 following a catastrophic fire.
The convent function dates to 1868, when the monastery was formally re-established as a women's institution.
