The Pskov-Pechersky Monastery was founded in the 1470s within a natural cave system whose resident monks refused to abandon it despite repeated orders from Moscow ecclesiastical authorities — the community's stubborn continuity through tsarist suppression, Swedish invasion, and Soviet anti-religious campaigns makes it one of the few Russian monasteries never formally closed. It remained active through the entire Soviet period, partly because the surrounding territory was briefly incorporated into Estonia between the wars, which complicated Kremlin jurisdiction long enough for the monastic community to outlast the pressure.
