Vasily Polenov donated his estate on the Oka River to the public in 1892, making it one of the first purpose-built artist's museums in Russia — predating the Tretyakov's formal public opening by several years. The estate at Bekhovo in Tula Oblast survived the Soviet period largely intact, an unusual outcome for a property so closely tied to pre-revolutionary cultural life, partly because Polenov's descendants remained active in its management throughout the 20th century.
