Below the eagle, the issuer's name БАНК РОССИИ (Bank of Russia) is inscribed in two lines, flanked by the fineness mark АG 925 to the lower left and the weight indicator 155,5 to the lower right. The Spaso-Eleazarovsky Monastery in Pskov Oblast carries unusual historical weight: it was here in the early sixteenth century that the monk Filofei formulated the "Third Rome" doctrine, asserting that Moscow had inherited the spiritual mantle of fallen Constantinople. The monastery fell into disuse and near-ruin during the Soviet period and was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church only in 2000, with restoration ongoing at the time this coin was issued.
