Issued in 2020 explicitly in recognition of medical workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, this is one of the few Russian commemorative circulation coins directly responding to an ongoing crisis rather than a historical anniversary. The Bank of Russia authorized several such pieces that year under its "selfless labour" thematic program, which had previously honored military and emergency service professions.
