Transnistria — the narrow strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border — declared independence from Moldova in 1990, a move that triggered a brief but bloody armed conflict in 1992. The ceasefire left Russian peacekeeping forces stationed there indefinitely, and the territory has remained in a state of unrecognized limbo ever since. Tiraspol, its capital, fell under Moldovan Soviet control in August 1941 and was retaken by Soviet forces on April 12, 1944 — the event this coin commemorates.
No UN member state recognizes Transnistrian sovereignty, yet the Republican Bank has issued coins continuously since the early 2000s.
