Ajman, the smallest and poorest of the Trucial States, issued a flood of gold commemoratives in the late 1960s and early 1970s almost entirely for the collector export market — not for domestic circulation. These pieces were produced under contract by European mints and distributed through philatelic and numismatic agencies abroad. The Gandhi issue appeared just months before the UAE federation replaced the individual Trucial State issuing authorities in 1971, making the entire commemorative program effectively a short-lived revenue scheme rather than a functioning monetary system.

Collector demand for these issues has remained modest since original issue.
