Obverse description The national arms of the Yemen Arab Republic—a spread eagle displayed, holding crossed janbiya daggers and a coffee branch, with a shield on its breast—are depicted centrally within a beaded rounded-square inner border. The Arabic legend of the republic’s name arcs around the upper portion of the rounded square, with the denomination خ٢٥ ريالًا inscribed above the eagle. The Gregorian year 1975 appears to the lower left and the Hijri year ١٣٩٥ to the lower right of the eagle. Along the outer border at the bottom, the legend YEMEN ARAB REPUBLIC curves in Latin characters, flanked by the denomination 25 RIALS, with the fineness mark .900 visible in the lower field.

Additional information

Issued to mark the commencement of oil exploration in the Yemen Arab Republic, this piece appeared years before any commercially viable petroleum was actually found — that came only in 1984, when Hunt Oil struck deposits in the Marib governorate. The optimism encoded in this coin proved premature by nearly a decade.
