Ali III ibn Husayn ruled Tunisia as Bey under French protectorate from 1882, following the Treaty of Bardo which effectively ended Tunisian fiscal independence. This coin exists because the protectorate administration needed coinage that could circulate alongside French metropolitan issues — the 15-franc equivalence is not decorative, it is a functional peg. The Arabic inscription Doriba fi ("struck in") was a longstanding Husainid convention identifying the mint of issue, here Tunis, though French technical oversight had largely supplanted traditional minting practice by this date.
