The Syrian State coinage of 1929 was produced under the French Mandate, with the Banque de Syrie et du Grand-Liban managing currency issuance as Paris consolidated administrative control over the territory. Essai pieces from this series were struck at the Paris Mint as trial submissions, and most were distributed to officials, collectors, and ministry archives rather than entering any circulation channel. The aluminium bronze alloy itself was under evaluation at this period — France was simultaneously trialling it for several colonial issues before committing to full production runs.
