Beschrijving keerzijde A finely detailed depiction of a Stegosaurus dominates the central field, shown in left profile with prominent dorsal plates rendered in high sculptural relief, set against a rocky cliff background. Beneath the full-bodied reconstruction of the living animal, a skeletal fossil outline of the same dinosaur is engraved along the ground line, flanked by Jurassic-period flora including ferns and cycad-like trees. The legend STEGOSAURUS arcs across the upper field, partially integrated with the dorsal plates of the animal, while JURASSIC is inscribed along the lower margin. The engraver's initials RN appear at lower left.

Aanvullende informatie

Part of the Royal Mint's ongoing prehistoric Britain series, this issue draws on fossil evidence that Stegosaurus — long assumed an exclusively North American genus — did in fact roam what is now the United Kingdom during the Late Jurassic. The 2023 discovery of a remarkably complete specimen at a Somerset quarry, nicknamed "Sophie's cousin" by paleontologists, directly informed the series and gave the Royal Mint its scientific justification for the subject.
