Friedeberg am Queis was a small Silesian market town, and its municipal savings bank — the Städtische Sparkasse — issued this Notgeld during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1922, when Reichsbank notes were being outpaced by price rises faster than the central presses could keep up. Local institutions across Germany stepped into the gap, authorizing their own emergency small-denomination scrip with whatever printer was available nearby. Josef Mandig was that printer here, working locally rather than through the large specialist Notgeld houses like Giesecke & Devrient or Koenig & Bauer that handled the more elaborate series.
Friedeberg became Mirsk after 1945 when the region transferred to Poland under the Potsdam Agreement.
