Weimar's 1921 Notgeld series was a deliberate promotional exercise — German municipalities had discovered that collectors across the country would pay face value for attractively printed emergency currency and never spend it, effectively giving the issuer an interest-free loan. The city leaned into this openly, commissioning Reineck & Klein on a series built around local landmarks rather than anything resembling sober monetary design.

Goethe's garden house on the Ilm was a natural choice for a city whose tourist identity had been inseparable from Schiller and Goethe for a century — and whose new constitutional significance, the Weimar Republic having been proclaimed and named there in 1919, gave the whole series an oddly layered political charge that the imagery carefully sidesteps.
