Issued by the Inspectorate of Prisoner of War Camps within the III Army Corps district, this note belongs to a class of internal camp scrip that proliferated across Germany from 1914 onward as a practical solution to a genuine administrative problem: the Hague Convention prohibited confiscating prisoners' pay, but allowing hard currency to circulate freely inside camp perimeters created obvious security and black-market risks. Scrip redeemable only within the camp system was the bureaucratic answer.
Ambrosius & Co. in Kirchhain, Niederlausitz, handled a number of these regional PoW issues — a small commercial printer pressed into wartime government work, as many were by 1917.
