Mainbernheim is a small Franconian town that in 1920 had a population of only a few hundred — precisely the kind of municipality that resorted to issuing its own bread scrip (Brotmarken) when postwar shortages made centralized rationing unworkable at the local level. This note was not currency in the conventional sense but a ration coupon denominated in pfennig, entitling the bearer to a corresponding value of bread from authorized suppliers. The distinction mattered legally, though in practice these circulated alongside ordinary Notgeld.

Konrad Triltsch in Würzburg handled a significant volume of small Franconian municipal printing during this period. Bürgermeister Flügann's signature authenticates the issue.
