| Obverse description | Orange-tinted notgeld on paper with a double-rule and dotted border frame. A central cartouche of scalloped form contains a vignette of a wicker flower basket overflowing with blossoms and wheat ears; below the vignette the issuing authority inscription and a five-line redemption text in German script appear, signed by the Bürgermeister with the date 1 Juni 1921. The denomination numeral '25' appears in large blackletter script at upper left and upper right, with stylized Pfennig ligature glyphs beneath each, while decorative horn-and-oak-leaf motifs occupy the lower corners. |

Gifhorn's 1921 notgeld issue was one of thousands produced by German municipalities scrambling to cover a coin shortage that the Reichsbank showed no urgency in resolving. Appelhans in Braunschweig was a prolific printer of Lower Saxon notgeld during this period, supplying numerous nearby towns with competent if unremarkable small-denomination issues. O. Krone's design credit is relatively uncommon — most municipal notgeld was issued anonymously — suggesting Gifhorn treated the commission with some deliberateness.
