Staßfurt, a town in Saxony-Anhalt, sits atop one of the richest potash salt deposits in Europe — a fact that fueled its industrial growth and made it an unlikely issuer of Notgeld during the inflationary chaos that swept German municipalities in 1921. Like hundreds of other German towns, Staßfurt stepped in to fill the gap left by a central banking system overwhelmed by coin shortages and accelerating price instability.
J. P. Himmer of Augsburg was a prolific Notgeld printer, handling commissions from municipalities across southern and central Germany during this period. The reference DeNG 2#1256.1 suggests this is the first catalogued type in the Staßfurt series.
