Obverse description Printed in dark green and black on light green paper, the upper portion carries a central wreath vignette enclosing a rooster perched on a tree stump, inscribed 'Gemeinde Schmiedefeld' along the wreath border, flanked on either side by detailed illustrations of glassmaking laboratory apparatus — flasks, graduated cylinders, burettes, thermometers, and reagent bottles including one labelled 'Salzsä[ure]'. The lower half bears the large Fraktur text 'Notgeld der Gemeinde Schmiedefeld' with the subtitle 'Glasindustrie- u. Luftkurort 720 m.ü.d.M.', and the denomination '25 Pfennig' appears in bold at lower left and right, flanking validity and place inscriptions with a manuscript signature above the title 'Gemeindevorstand'.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in the same dark green and black on light green stock, divided into three vertical panels. The central panel presents a detailed vignette of the 'Bahnhof Rennsteig' railway station, with a steam locomotive and freight wagons on the foreground tracks and a half-timbered station building set against a forested Thuringian hillside. The left lateral panel shows a primitive nude figure embracing a tree trunk, while the right panel depicts a mounted knight in armour; the denomination numeral '25' and abbreviation 'Pfg' appear in bold at the upper corners. A three-line verse in Fraktur script occupies the lower border panel: 'Wo Urgerman' und Kriegersmann zu Jagd und Kampf einst ritten, den Rennsteig kreuzt die Zahnradbahn jetzt in Gebirges Mitten.'
