| Obverse description | Central vignette within an oval cartouche presents a haloed saint — almost certainly St. Nicolaus, patron of sailors — rendered in an Expressionist woodcut style, holding a staff and a shield bearing the Helgoland arms, set against the island's tricolor (green, red, white). Marine motifs frame the composition: sea creatures (scorpionfish and pufferfish) occupy the upper corners, while seashells, a starfish, and sea vegetation fill the lower border. The serial number appears in red at lower left, flanked by two inscription panels in the Helgolandic Frisian dialect, with the date "im April 1921" and the designer's name printed at the foot, above the printer's imprint. |
