Grabow an der Elde was one of hundreds of small German municipalities that printed their own Notgeld during the inflationary chaos of the early 1920s. These emergency issues were technically outside the Reichsbank system and carried no guarantee beyond the issuing town's word — which, for a small Mecklenburg river town with limited tax revenues, was not a strong promise.
Local printing for these issues was common, and quality varied accordingly. Grabow's 1921 series falls squarely in the late Kleingeldersatz period, when coin shortages drove even minor towns to paper.
