Aschersleben's 1920 notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency money that flooded Germany after the Reichsbank failed to supply sufficient small-denomination coinage. Coin hoarding and metal shortages during and after the First World War had effectively stripped low-value specie from everyday commerce, forcing hundreds of cities to print their own stopgap currency. Aschersleben, a mid-sized industrial town in Saxony-Anhalt, was among thousands that turned to local printers rather than wait for central relief.
Buhe handled the presswork — a regional printer, not one of the major notgeld producers of the period.
