The central field carries a fine vertical-line guilloche underprint over which the large denomination numeral '25' appears in violet as a ghost figure, overlaid by the bold letterpress inscription 'Gut 25 schein' and the spelled-out value 'Fünfundzwanzig Pfennig'. Below, the place and issue date 'Berga (Elster) 22. Juni 1920.' are set in letterpress, followed by the authority line 'Der Stadtgemeindevorstand' and a manuscript facsimile signature. The validity line 'Gültig bis 31. Berga an der Elster is a small town in the Greiz district, and this 25 Pfennig Notgeld was issued during the early 1920s wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Germany as coin shortages made everyday transactions nearly impossible. The printer, Otto Henning A.G. of Greiz, handled a substantial portion of Thuringian Notgeld output during this period — a regional firm serving regional clients, which kept costs low and turnaround quick.
