Koblenz notgeld from this period reflects the acute coin shortage that gripped German municipalities following the First World War — silver and nickel had been systematically diverted for war production, and Reichsbank small change never adequately replaced what had been lost. Stadt Coblenz issued these emergency pieces under French occupation; the Rhineland had been under Allied control since late 1918, a fact that made the local administration's independent currency decisions politically awkward but practically necessary.
Paper notgeld of this denomination rarely survived in quantity — small-value pieces were used hard and discarded once redemption was offered in 1922.
