Opmerkingen

Kreis Wittlich issued this note in 1919 as part of the enormous wave of Kleingeldersatz — emergency small-change substitutes — that flooded Germany after the war left official coinage effectively absent from everyday transactions. District-level issuers like Wittlich had no formal monetary authority; the practice was tolerated rather than sanctioned, and the Reichsbank periodically threatened crackdowns that rarely materialized.

Carl Schleicher & Schüll in Düren supplied a large proportion of the Rhineland's Notgeld output during this period, which means the paper stock and print quality here are more consistent than notes produced by municipal printers improvising with whatever was on hand.
