Verden an der Aller, a small cathedral town in Lower Saxony, began issuing Notgeld in 1918 as the wartime metal shortage made small-denomination coinage effectively disappear from circulation. Municipal Magistrate-issued paper was the practical fix — not a banking instrument but an administrative stopgap, authorized and distributed locally to keep trade moving at the butcher and the bakery.
First-series Verden Notgeld is not rare, but the 1918 paper issues attract more attention than the 1921 decorative pieces precisely because they were functional rather than collector-targeted.
