Ascension Island had no permanent civilian population and no real monetary economy in 1981 — it functioned essentially as a British military and communications outpost in the South Atlantic. Coins issued under its authority were never intended for circulation and exist purely as collector vehicles, a practice the Crown Agents facilitated aggressively for dependent territories throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
The Charles and Diana wedding issue appeared across dozens of such territories simultaneously, often sharing identical specifications and sometimes identical dies.
