Guernsey issued this coin to mark the Queen's visit to the island in 1978, one of several Channel Island royal visit pieces struck in the late 1970s as the islands leveraged their Crown Dependency status to produce collectible proof issues largely aimed at overseas buyers. The broader programme was frankly more commercial than ceremonial — the States of Guernsey had recognised by the mid-1970s that limited-edition silver proofs generated reliable revenue with minimal monetary risk.
The 28.28g specification mirrors the standard adopted across Commonwealth commemorative coinage of the period, allowing shared planchet sourcing with other issuing authorities.
