Gyanendra's first stint as king lasted just three days in June 2001, following the royal massacre that killed his brother Birendra and eight other family members. He was crowned permanently later that year after Dipendra — who had carried out the shootings — died in a coma. These coins were struck across that transition, their production straddling one of the most violent episodes in Nepalese royal history.
