Cyprus became a British Crown Colony in 1925, and the 1955 coinage series — of which this piece is part — was issued just months before the EOKA insurgency launched its armed campaign for enosis, union with Greece. Within three years the island was under emergency rule. By 1960 it was independent, and this series was already obsolete.
